About Iyengar Yoga:
Iyengar Yoga teachers must complete intensive teacher training for at least three years before undergoing an independent rigorous assessment process. The Iyengar certification is a sign of excellence, clarity and depth of understanding and the certification mark is used by certificated Iyengar yoga teachers worldwide. The use of props and the rigorous three-year teacher training helps minimise the risk of injury. Iyengar yoga is ideal for beginners who want a safe introduction to yoga, but also provides deeper instruction for those more advanced.
Iyengar yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga known for its focus on the correct alignment of asanas (postures) in order to give students the best possible benefits from their yoga practice. It uses props such as belts, blocks and blankets to enable the correct performance of postures which makes the poses accessible to those of all ages and all walks of life.
The practice of Iyengar yoga helps to develop mental and emotional resilience. Mobility and strength is cultivated by working on the outer sheaths of the body, and continued practice will begin to access the organic and subtle body, and finally, the mind.
Monique is a certified Iyengar yoga teacher, and has been practicing for eight years. Monique’s yoga journey began with the desire to be able to touch her toes. After her first class she realised she had stumbled upon a gift much greater than that; she learnt about her own body, mind and emotions and how they were deeply connected and interdependent. Her fascination now stems from this interconnection, and her classes aim to bring harmony to each facet of the human experience. Monique also has a great interest in the physical benefits of yoga, and has through regular practice been able to discontinue chiropractic treatment for her scoliosis. She is fascinated by how effective yoga can be in treating and preventing injuries, and aims to develop her classes around physical recovery and maintenance.
