Robin, better known to locals as Bob the Barista, found there was something lacking in the local coffee shop fare, and after much research, sought out to bring the authentic bagel experience to his neck of the woods.
Bob’s main food fare is the artisan New York style bagel that is crafted from 100% whole-wheat stone-ground flour and a slightly sweeter Montreal-inspired alternative, toasted with sesame seeds. Proud of his local community, Robin only sources locally which makes his offering that much sweeter. His bagels are handmade from scratch by local baker Jeremy Barty using an intricate preparation process that can take up to 18 hours. It is this process that ensures a fresh and delicious taste that is hard to match with other pastries.
Bob’s bagels can either be bought in packs of four or with delicious toppings prepared fresh while you wait with your cuppa. And whilst you are tucking into the delicious fare, your cappuccino, Americana or coffee of choice are served in hand made cups, each a work of art sourced locally from well-known potter Tess Gawith. Other delicious tidbits include home bakes like the ever-popular traditional Dutch Amsterdammertje and ginger loaf all locally made with large doses of Kalk Bay love.
Whilst Bob’s menu and coffee are certainly the main draw cards, local moms and dad’s alike will find the fact that Bobs Bagels is literally a stone’s throw from the popular Lever Street Park, a great reason to swing by. Not only does Bob serve up a great coffee and bagel, but parents and child minders also get a break whilst their kids get a play in. And soon on the cards, Bob will be catering for kiddies parties, the park being a dream venue for a peace-of-mind party for the wee ones.
Robin’s quest with Bob’s Bagel Café was to find a way to really appreciate the simple things in life. When you visit, the experience is more intimate than at your average coffee shop. And you get to chat with a person who cares about his craft. Not just a barista, but also an aficionado in the art of living well.
Just off the Main Road Kalk Bay, simply look for Bob’s red 1960’s Volkswagen kombi housing his signage and you’re nearly there.
